Northern Beaches Prostate Cancer Support Group Big Aussie Barbie

Why we chose to host a Big Aussie Barbie

The Northern Beaches Support Group decided to host a Big Aussie Barbie Family Fun Day in September with the purpose to not only raise funds, but also start the conversation about Prostate Cancer.

Our Big Aussie Barbie Family Fun Day

We organised a daylong event with lots of fun activities and entertainment for the Northern Beaches community to take part in. We had a full program of performers including ukulele players, a martial arts demonstration, community choir, school choir, Scottish dancers and local entertainers. We catered for the children with a jumping castle and face painting; and of course provided a coffee cart for the adults! The Classic Motor Enthusiasts were also invited to display their cars, and our members potted plants for a plant stall. There were market stalls for people to wander round and of course, last but not least, we provided the big sausage sizzle!

A raffle was drawn on the day with 17 prizes – all kindly donated by local businesses. This again broadened our impact as we sold tickets before the BBQ day at shopping centres, all the while advertising our event, spreading the word about prostate cancer and letting people know who we were and that there was a prostate cancer support group in their area to whom they could turn for help and information. The only thing we couldn't plan was the weather and the day turned out to be a little damp, but that didn’t stop everything going ahead and we still had a successful day with quite a crowd of people there.

Why hosting a Big Aussie Barbie was important to us

We know how important it is to get the word out about prostate cancer, so we decided to organise an event that would draw people in, get them talking about prostate cancer and raise money for an important cause! That's why we decided to host a Big Aussie Barbie.
